Testimonial - Obert

"Great people to deal with, and they got us our

tax exemption in double-quick time."

Susan Obert knows how to travel well. This winter, she's wrapping up business in California and heading to the warm blue waters of the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean.

Living accommodations while there will be provided by a 46' Kelly Peterson sailboat, a handsome craft that sleeps four comfortably in private berths. The yacht is beautifully equipped, says Susan, who believes the previous owner had invested a great deal of money into making the yacht both comfortable and seaworthy.

"One of the great things about the Peterson is that it has a center cockpit," she says, "which creates a good-sized aft deck." Susan was less happy with the fact the yacht, purchased earlier in 2004, also attracted a $40,000 sales tax penalty from the State of California.

"As we are leaving immediately for the Caribbean, and have no intention of staying in California, it made no sense to pay more tax," she says. "Fortunately, the yacht broker was able to put us in touch with Aero & Marine Tax Professionals."

"Tom Alston worked with us to put the exemption paperwork together," she continues. "The Aero & Marine people who handled our case were very professional. They provided very clear instructions, and if I did leave something out, they were on the phone very quickly. Great people to deal with, and they got us our tax exemption in double-quick time."

The Oberts are not expecting to play all day in the Caribbean. They have a home, which they rent out and which needs attention. They are also taking with them a little restoration project.

"We own a fifty foot wooden ketch, 'Nortada,' built for Prince Hendrick of Prussia back in 1924," she says. "My husband Tracy has put a lot of love and sweat into the interior woodwork, the deck and the hull of the boat over the last dozen years. Now that's complete, our intention is to take her to the Caribbean too, and finish the rigging and the interior restoration."

Tracy has been around boats his whole life. "I think this is the longest he's been away from the water," she says. "I love sailing too, and I'm very excited about going. Tracy's son is already established down there, and our other children will visit. We can sail, live, work and play all in the same place. Not bad, huh?"
